Hiking and trekking are words we often use interchangeably but are they really the same? While it is true that both mean basically going outside and taking a walk in nature, they’re also very different. Here we tell you more about these two concepts, so you can be well informed and choose the right activity for you!

Hiking consists of walks of no longer than a day in man-made trails and roads, after which you usually reach a campsite or refuge. So, for this type of activity, you don’t need to carry a tent, kitchen utensils, or a lot of food in your backpack. A daypack will be more than enough for you to carry some snacks, plenty of water, and your personal essentials. Although having a first aid kit never hurt anybody either!

Trekking, on the other hand, consists of walks of two or more days in areas where there is no means of transport, for which it is essential to carry a tent, in the absence of shelters along the way. Also, it is necessary to bring food for the whole duration of the walk as well as cooking utensils, which will mean using a larger backpack (cargo type).

Which one should I choose?

If you want to spend a Sunday morning recharging your batteries and clearing your mind surrounded by nature, then a hike might be the best idea. Also, this is a friendly activity suitable to all, so why not invite your friends and family? Just team up and enjoy a fun outdoor experience together!

Now, if what you’re looking for is a mental and physical challenge, trekking is the answer. Plan ahead, research about the area, and make sure you pack accordingly. Even if your trekking will last for only a couple of days, be safe and make sure you’re prepared for the unexpected.
